Lynne Stewart on the SF 8

Support of the San Francisco 8

An open call to all my friends and comrades and political cohorts,

...the Movement

After a lazy summer, I was called back to action
by the fact of the tremendous victory that was
won by the lawyers for the San Francisco 8, in
state court in San Francisco, when the Judge
against the strong opposition of the government
(California Attorney General Jerry Brown (!)) set
bail. In my 45 year experience as an activist
and as an attorney, they just don???t set bail in
a case that involves the murder of a cop??? -not
in the police state . They especially don???t
set bail when the defendants are activist black men.

Update on SF 8

Strong showing at rally for SF 8; hearing postponed

SF Bayview

by Cynthia Nelson

?Free the SF 8! Kidnapped by the state!? As the
sun peeked over the city skyline Tuesday morning,
a lively and vocal crowd of supporters of the
political prisoners known as the San Francisco 8
rallied in front of the county jail at 850
Bryant, where six of the men are now being held.

The 50-100 demonstrators included elders, young
folks and everyone in between, including a small
contingent of bike messengers. They join protests
that have been taking place in Los Angeles, New
York, Boston, Orlando and elsewhere around the country.

Support the San Francisco 8!

As you have probably heard, Eight former Black Panthers were arrested January 23rd in California, New York and Florida on charges related to the 1971 killing of a San Francisco police officer. Similar charges were thrown out after it was revealed that police used torture to extract confessions when some of these same men were arrested in New Orleans in 1973. Richard Brown, Richard O'Neal, Ray Boudreaux, and Hank Jones were arrested in California. Francisco Torres was arrested in Queens, New York. Harold Taylor was arrested in Florida. Two men charged have been held as political prisoners for over 30 years – Herman Bell and Jalil Muntaqim are both in New York State prisons. A ninth man -- Ronald Stanley Bridgeforth – is still being sought. The men were charged with the murder of Sgt. John Young and conspiracy that encompasses numerous acts between 1968 and 1973.
